Google announces a ‘New Inbox’

According to the Gmail Blog The key feature of the new design is gathering mail together into five categories and providing you with simple access to your mail in that category. Hmmm. It sounds a bit like a spin on the Gmail Labs feature ‘Multiple Inboxes’ I’ve been using for several years. The difference is they’ve pre selected some categories to begin with. From the video there are tabs for emails from:

  • Social Sites
  • Promotions and offers
  • Updates, bill and receipts
  • Primary – your ‘important mail’

It looks like you can substitute your own Gmail labels for the predefined tabs making it very much like the multiple inbox feature.

We’ll find out more as we get a chance to try it out when new mail box is rolled out over the next few weeks. The good news is, if you don’t like it you can turn the feature off.
